Past President Communique #2 – Pat Deppiesse – Nov. 21, 2016

“Know for certain,…that I am the perfect and perpetual Virgin Mary, Mother of the true God…I will give all my love, my compassion, my help and my protection to the people.  I am your merciful mother… the merciful mother of all those who love me, of those who cry to me, those who seek me, of those who have confidence in me.  Here I will hear their weeping, their sorrow, and will remedy and alleviate all their multiple sufferings, necessities and misfortunes.

Let nothing discourage you, nothing depress you; let nothing alter your heart or your countenance…. Am I not here who am your Mother?  Are you not under my shadow and protection?  Am I not your fountain of life?  Are you not in the folds of my mantle, in the crossing of my arms?  Is there anything else that you need?”

Our Lady of Guadalupe, Dec. 9, 1531 to Juan Diego

Having just read “Mother of the Americas”, by Robert Feeney, I am inspired to send you the above quotation and hope you enjoy reading it as I did.  December 12, 2016 is the 485th anniversary of the apparitions in Mexico City.  If you have an opportunity to make a pilgrimage to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe to view the actual image, I encourage you to do so, you will always cherish that time.

Archives and History

As I have been collecting items for our Archives, I have developed an Index, or list of items that the provincial level needs to have in every term’s archival material.  I am attaching a list that I have developed for the provincial council that you may wish to edit and use for your diocesan councils.  So far, with the help of several members, I have collected most things needed for my term, and that of Doreen Gowans, and Nancy Simms and am working on filling the Index for Marianna Caldwell and of course, for our current president.

I encourage diocesan past presidents to prepare a list of what you want to preserve in your Archives going forward.  If you do prepare a list, would you consider sending it to me and to the other past-presidents.  No point re-inventing the wheel!  I also attach an information sheet sent out a few years ago by national honourary past-president, Marie Cameron that addresses this challenge!  Be sure to obtain a central place in your diocese for your archived material.

This week, I met with Gloria Gausboel and Jenny Shaw, who are part of my team for Archives, to review the binders of pictures that have been given to me.  We put together a collage of pictures of provincial executive and special events that we will save for the terms of the past-presidents I have named above, plus a few earlier years.  Going forward I will prepare a list of pictures that we must have in every president’s file.  Any pictures that are left from the many binders I received, I will bring to St. Nicholas Parish for our spring mid-term meeting so that you can all have a look through and take ones that your diocesan council would be happy to have I’m sure.

I would like to remind you to share your communiques with myself and the other six diocesan past presidents.  We love to hear your great ideas, and by working together, we learn from one another.

Policy & Procedures (P&P)

Does your diocesan council have a P&P?  If you do, it is the responsibility of the Past-president to review, update and ensure your manual is up to date.  When was the last time you reviewed yours?  Please inform the parish council past-presidents, that if they do not have one, be sure to go to the national website and pick up Workshop #7 How to Develop a Parish Council Policy & Procedure Manual and start to write one for their council.  I have attached a copy for your use. The provincial and diocesan P&Ps should also be made available to councils as a guideline.

Consultative Capacity

How are you doing in your role as past-president?  It is not our role to sit back and say we are finished!  Are you able to be a kind and supportive mentor to your president?  Remember what a huge responsibility it was for us as presidents, and how we appreciated any help we could get!  Let’s continue to Joyfully Serve the Lord!

As we enter into the season of Advent, let us remember the prayer of Pope Francis:  “And you, our Lady, through your grace, your intercession, and your example, deliver us from all evil and untie the knots that prevent us from being united with God, so that we, free from sin and error, may find him in all things, may have our hearts placed in him and may serve him always in our brothers and sisters.”

Wishing all of you a happy and holy Christmas with your loved ones and friends,

Love and blessings,
