Resolutions Communique #2 – Sharon Geiger – Nov. 27, 2016

Dear Sisters in the League and Father Edwin

All of you should have received your Catholic Women's League Magazine by now and have checked out the resolutions that were passed at the National convention and their action plans. You will find them in the centre of the magazine.

The action plans need to be followed up. Why do we write resolutions unless we do something about them? For instance resolution 2016.04 - write letters to the prime minister, federal minister of health and your member of parliament - educate your members and the community at large and monitor the government to the response of the resolution.

I have given an example of one resolution but we need to write letters on all of the 2016 resolutions. In Joan Bona's (National Resolutions Chairperson) 2nd communiqué she states that resolutions cannot stand alone. Without the support of members through written form and without their voice, the resolutions process is diminished in motivation policymakers, She also says Be a voice for others. By elevating the process through letter-writing, awareness is brought to these issues and aids in bringing about legislative changes, healthier eating guides, warning labels and immigration. A broad range of issues - I know that with members' help it can be done.

You can also find the resolutions on the national website www, cwl,.ca

I am looking forward to receiving the titles of the resolutions being worked on in your Dioceses by January 31, 2017.

I hope that all councils have the Resolutions Supplement to the Executive Handbook to guide them through the resolutions process.

Topics in this supplement include Guidelines for Resolution Chairperson, Guideline for Resolution Committees, Checklist for Reviewing Proposal Resolutions, Research and Preparation of Resolutions and Formal Presentation of Resolutions and Briefs, Frequently Asked Questions plus other items. One other important part is planning a workshop.

If many members do not know the process of forming a resolution then a workshop is needed for them to understand this.

It is important to work as a team so that not just one member is doing all the work.

There are many topics of concern in society, so get together and brainstorm topics that members in parish councils could develop as a resolution. If help is needed I will help you in anyway that I can.

Please pray for this year's National delegation - National President Margaret Ann Jacobs, National President-Elect Anne Gorman, National Chairperson of Legislation Nancy Simms and National Chairperson of Resolutions Joan Bona who will meeting with the federal government November 28,, 29 and 30. The delegation is also participating in the Parliamentary Question Period on Wednesday, November 30, 2016.

A reminder that the annual reporting deadline for parish councils is December 15th.

Today we begin the season of Advent and I would like to quote from Janet Schaeffler, OP "let's pause for Scripture, reflection, prayer, and practices and experience the comfort of God, from whom all true joy comes."

Have a blessed Advent and enjoy Christmas with family and friends.
