Dear League sisters and Father Edwin,  


Legislation is social justice in action.  It is the carrying out of League resolutions to influence government policy.


Welcome to the new Diocesan chairpersons of Kamloops, Prince George and Vancouver to Team Legis!   The members of this Standing Committee are:

The main purpose of this Standing Committee is: to monitor and study legislation at all levels of government, whether the legislation is in the process of change or our League is requesting change.

 

The websites of Parliament of Canada, BC Legislature and Yukon Legislature contain the Debates (Hansard), Bills, lists of current members and how to contact them, and other useful information.

“The House” (House of Commons) stands adjourned until Monday, September 18, 2017 at 11 a.m. (EDT).

The B.C. Legislative Assembly will return on Friday, September 8, at 10 a.m.

The Yukon Legislative Assembly Fall sitting will start on October 3, 2017.


At the 97th Annual National Convention in Charlottetown, P.E.I. 4 Resolutions were adopted:


2017.01    Full implementation of the Supreme Court Decision in R. v.Gladue for

                  Indigenous Offenders. (Ontario Provincial Council)

2017.02   Mandatory age verification mechanisms for adult pornographic websites.

                  (BC & Yukon Provincial Council)

2017.03   Zero-rated status under the Goods and Services Tax Provisions of the Excise

                  Tax Act for child safety products. (Ontario provincial Council)

2017.04    Protection from coercion of conscience for Healthcare Professionals. (BC &

             Yukon Provincial Council)

Motions:

Provincial level:

At the 2017 BC & Yukon Provincial Convention a motion was passed concerning the CWL support of the Protection of Communities and exploited Persons Act (Bill C-36).

National Level:

Following the motions presented at the 2017 annual convention, letters from the League were sent to the Prime Minister of Canada and to the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops regarding Bill C-16 An Act to amend the Canadian Human Rights Act and the Criminal Code.


News from the Parliament:

There have been recent changes to the National Cabinet, attached is the list of the current officers and their portfolios.


The House of Commons has 336 members in office:

Bloc Québécois:       10

Independent:              2

Green Party:              1


Pope Francis re-assures us that our job is very important:

“… no one can demand that religion should be relegated to the inner sanctum of personal life, without influence on societal and national life, without concern for the soundness of civil institutions, without a right to offer an opinion on events affecting society.” (“The Joy of Gospel” 183)
