Introductions of Molly Boucher Bursary Winner 2012
I would like to take the time to thank Fr.Tien, Nancy, Sheila, and Carol once again for assisting in the selection of this year’s winner of the Molly Boucher Bursary award.
I would like to tell you a little bit about the grand lady the award stemmed from.
Molly was born in Lancashire England May 10th 1921, she immigrated to Canada with her parents where they settled in Vernon BC. She passed away on January 15th 1990 in her family’s home in Burnaby BC.
In 1990 at the BC & Yukon Provincial Annual Convention of the Catholic Women’s League of Canada a $500.00 bursary in memory of Honorary Life Member, Molly Boucher, was established.
Molly Boucher was the mother of eight children. She worked for the Diocese of Vancouver as Secretary for Archbishop Carney from 1970 to 1981. She was involved in the Catholic Women’s League for many years and was National President from 1972 to 1974. Between 1970 and 1988, Molly Boucher was President of the following organizations: Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace for BC; Catholic School Trustees Association (BC); the Federation of Independent Schools Association (founding President); Canadian Catholic Schools Trustees Association, and the Catholic Lay Associations group. She was Director of Administration for the Papal Visit to Vancouver in 1984. In May of 1987, Molly Boucher wrote, “For me the most important development since Vatican 11 has been my personal realization that each person is called by God to a special vocation within the world, just as a priest or religious is called to his or her particular vocation”.
Molly was working to complete a university degree when she was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The work that Molly Boucher did for the Catholic Women’s League and for the Church (especially in the field of education) is an inspiration for all Catholic women. This Bursary was established to provide some financial assistance to a member of the Catholic Women’s League of Canada in BC & Yukon who wishes to further her education.
It is indeed an honour to tell you a little bit about our recipient who will be receiving the Molly Boucher Bursary of $500.00 for the year 2012.
She hails from Abbotsford BC in the Diocese of Vancouver and is a member of St. James Parish Church.
This bursary will assist her in continuing her education. She plans to attend Corpus Christi College in Vancouver and to work towards a Bachelor of Arts Degree. She plans on completing a major in Political Science, a minor in Psychology, as well as working towards a French Proficiency Certificate. From there she plans on finishing her degree at the University of Toronto.
She has been in the CWL for two years and feels it is extremely important to be involved in her parish community. She knows that the CWL sends more than one voice to Ottawa to help make much needed changes in our laws.
As Saraphina couldn’t be here at this evening, I would like to call upon her Vancouver Diocesan President, Jenny Shaw, to accept this award for the 2012 Molly Boucher Bursary Award winner, Saraphina U.
