April showers bring May flowers! Isn’t it lovely to see the trees in bloom and all the beautiful flowers, all God’s creation.
By now the diocesan conventions are over and I would like to welcome our new diocesan president-elect/organization chairpersons: in Nelson Victoria Oppertshauser, in Victoria Laurel Phyall and in Prince George Maria Tejero. Congratulations, I hope you will enjoy your term and I thank you for all your service in the League.
Other news is that BC & Yukon Provincial Council has a new Provincial Spiritual Advisor for the next five years, Fr. David John from Sparwood. He will join us at the convention in Whitehorse. We also have a new National Spiritual Advisor, Bishop Stephen Jensen from the Prince George Diocese. Both these Spiritual Advisors will be installed at this year’s conventions.
Talking about conventions, when you sign up for the national convention in Winnipeg, August 12th to 15th, 2018, please note that it was decided not to book the provincial dinner at a restaurant; instead it will be left up to individual groups to go out on their own if they so desire. In previous years it was not the best experience for most as the restaurant was crowded and many had to wait a long time for their meal. Members have expressed the wish for more social time. We will try this and with more feedback will evaluate anew for next year.
Convention Subsidies – I am pleased to state that we were able to give out convention subsidies to all members that had applied. By now everyone has been contacted and the cheques can be picked up at the registration desk at the convention.
Life Membership – This is a reminder that the notice of nomination form needs to be completed in order to confirm that the nominee meets all criteria and is a worthy candidate for life membership. This notice of nomination is approved by motion by the diocesan/provincial executive at an executive meeting and is signed by the nominating council’s secretary and the nominating council’s president and mailed to the executive director at national office by September 15th. More information on life membership is in the national manual pages 31 to 33.
Catholic Women’s Leadership Foundation: three women from BC & Yukon will be the very first students in the Leadership Program which starts in May, 2018. Congratulations to the winners Sue Harding from Whitehorse, Yukon, Michelle Robertson from Summerland, BC, Nelson Diocese and Liza Jose from Richmond, BC, Vancouver diocese!
Health Canada Consultation on palliative care – please check it out on the national website, the current status is open from May 7 to July 13, 2018.
Health Canada is holding a public engagement asking that Canadians share their ideas, innovations and lived-experience related to palliative care. Your input will help the government develop a framework on palliative care for Canadians.
This is my last communiqué as organization chairperson and I want to thank you for all your support in my term. I am looking forward to seeing many of you at the provincial convention in Whitehorse. Come and experience the hospitality of our sisters in the north!
May Our Lady of Good Counsel protect us in all that we do for God and Canada.
