“The spiritual dimension sets the League apart from all other woman’s organizations”

Necrology Mass

I want to encourage all parish councils to have a Mass said for deceased members during November. It is called a Necrology Mass. It is a beautiful way to remember and honor our deceased members. You can read out all the names of your deceased members at the Mass. I also urge you to attend a Remembrance Day ceremony to honor the dead who gave their lives so we could live in freedom.

Advent

This beautiful time of year will be upon us soon (December 2). Take the time to make or buy an Advent wreath and then journey through Advent to Christmas by praying at the wreath daily. There are many excellent booklets you can use to pray with during Advent. The 2 that I like are Heaven to Manger and Peace on Earth both by Danielle Bean. They can be ordered from Novalis at1 800 387 7164.

Also, please remember to purchase religious Christmas postage stamps for your Christmas cards. Thank you.

Choosing a Simpler Lifestyle.

Pope Francis urges us to adopt a simpler lifestyle. A lifestyle that “would involve giving up all those things that fill our lives but empty our hearts.” Christmas is a good time to reassess our lifestyles.

Liturgy of the Hours

Our national Spiritual Development chairperson Sherri Guinta has urged us to start saying the Liturgy of the Hours. She said it takes time to learn and be comfortable with it, so persevere. You can purchase it from Amazon or a Catholic book store. You can also go online to universalis.

Deceased Members

Remember to please get councils to report the deaths of members as soon as possible.
and print names neatly and correctly when submitting them to national. Thank you.

New Themes for 2019

National’s new theme is “Caring for our Common Home” and our new Provincial theme is “Witnessing to the Truth”. They come into effect on January 1, 2019. One of the duties of the Spiritual Development Chairperson is to facilitate the study of League themes.

Spiritual Advisers

You can download the handbook for Spiritual Advisers at the national website and give it to your parish or diocesan spiritual adviser. Remember to meet and work with your Spiritual Adviser regularly.

Lay Ministries

“The strength of League ministry can be measured in proportion to the depth of

members’ spirituality.”  It is so beautiful to see our members involved with all church ministries. I would like to add two practical ministries. One is cleaning the church and the other is arranging flowers at the church. Before Easter and Christmas, we give our parish church a thorough cleaning. It sparkles when it is finished!  Good flower arranging really adds to the overall appearance of the church. Dostoevsky said “The world will be saved by beauty”

A Smile and a Sense of Humor

Pope Francis urges us to smile and have a sense of humor. I once read that a sad face is indicative of being ungrateful. “A joyful heart is good medicine.”

The Sexual Abuse Scandal

Please remember to continue to pray and fast for everyone involved in the sexual abuse scandal in the church. Thank you

Reverence for the Holy Name of Jesus Resolution

This resolution is about the second commandment “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain” The action plan for this resolution is five-fold,

  • celebrate the feast day which is January 3rd of the Most Holy Name of Jesus in your homes and parishes
  • speak out when Jesus’ name is not being revered in books, media, videos and casual conversation,
  • teach family members to revere Jesus’ Holy Name
  • say the Jesus prayer throughout the day. (Lord Jesus son of God have mercy on me a sinner or simply say Jesus.)
  • say the Litany of the Most Holy Name of Jesus regularly.

I would like to close by wishing everyone a holy Advent and a blessed Christmas.

May Our Lady of Good Counsel guide and protect all of us as we journey towards Heaven
