Happy New Year!
May the Lord bless you and keep you, the Lord make His face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you, the Lord lift up his countenance upon you.

We had a great start to the new year by having a new baby born in to our family. The baby is a little boy named Andrew Arthur L’Heureux. He is the fifth child of our oldest son and his wife and our 15th grandchild. Praise God!

Witnessing to the Truth, our new provincial theme

I know as a Christian it can be very difficult to witness to the truth especially in our secular society. I urge you to pray daily that you will have the courage, the education and the strength to stand up for the truth. Pray constantly!

Care for our Common Home, (sub theme for 2019 – Water)

This national theme really speaks to my heart as I am an environmentalist. I spent considerable time exploring the sub theme water. Did you know that 71% of our earth is covered in water, and that our bodies are comprised of between 55% to 78% of water depending on the size of our body? Water is considered a purifier in most religions throughout the world. The use of water in our communities, homes and country play a significant role.  We use it to quench our thirst, to wash our clothes, and to bath ourselves. We use it for recreation. Summer sports such as swimming, boating, water skiing, surfing, diving. sport fishing and boat racing use water. Winter sports such as skiing, snow-boarding, snow shoeing, skating, hockey, curling use water in one form or another. It played a huge part in the exploration of our country and today transports some our goods all over the world. Today 70% of fresh water is used in agriculture. I enjoy gardening so I know how important water is to a good garden. It is also used to extinguish forest fires. I personally find great joy in the beauty of water. Waterfalls, lakes, rivers, oceans, and fountains all inspire me.  The biggest single misuse of this precious resource however is when man pollutes it. Water in the form of tears help us express our emotions such as joy and sorrow. Water is vital to all forms of life. I urge each council to have an in-depth discussion about water and then decide on a project for your council.

Legalization of Marijuana

In response to the legalization of marijuana in Canada, the bishops of BC and Yukon have written a letter. The letter states that just because something is made legal it does not mean it is necessarily morally acceptable. If marijuana is used for therapeutic reasons it is acceptable however people need to know smoking is a serious health hazard. Using marijuana as a recreational drug however is morally wrong because of its intoxicating effect.

World Day of Prayer

March 1st is the day set aside for this annual event. The women of Slovenia have chosen the theme “Come-everything is ready.”  The theme is based on the parable in Luke 14 1-24. The parable tells us about the feast that was prepared and all those invited declined to come, citing many excuses. Those traveling along the highways were then invited. Go to the website World Day of Prayer for many good ideas which also have ideas for children

A Great Resource for Families

I came across a great resource that would make a wonderful gift for any family. It is a book called “Blessings and Prayers for Home and Family” from the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops. The blessings cover everything from engagements, marriage, births, daily life, sickness, death, Advent, Christmas, Lent Easter and traditional prayers. Other books I recommend for the home are a Catholic Bible, a book about the saints and the Catechism of the Catholic church.

Holy Priests come from Holy Families

Many of us have read, listened, fasted and prayed about the sexual abuse scandal in the church. It is important to face it head on and to remain calm because God is with us in this crisis and He can take great good out of the worst evil. We need to ask ourselves how our family life is, because holy priests come from holy families

May Our Lady of Good Counsel pray for us.
