Take Action
Buying Sex is a Crime January 15, 2019

The Catholic Women’s League calls it members to holiness by taking action to ensure the dignity and human rights of all citizens, especially the marginalized, are being met.   One of the most serious human rights violations of our time is that of Human Trafficking.

To quote Pope Francis “Human Trafficking is a crime against humanity.  We must unite our efforts to free victims and stop this crime that’s become ever more aggressive, that threatens not just individuals, but the foundational values of society.”

Canada became a world leader by creating a new law in 2014 called the “Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Act,” which recognizes that those being exploited, and often trafficked, as the real victims.  Those who purchase or make money selling their services are the criminals.

Canada is not enforcing the existing law, and this is serious, as its effectiveness is up for review by the end of 2019 and at that time Canada could fully decriminalize prostitution.

Visit www.buyingsexisacrime.org for more information; view the links to the 4 very informative vignettes; click on the “take action” tab at the top of the navigation page with tips on what questions to ask your local police department. Also take action immediately by contacting your local MP and MLA in support of maintaining the existing law.

Canada needs our voices to retain and enforce the existing law and ensure financial support is provided to those wanting to exit this horrendous and demoralizing practise.

National CWL Survey Participant Invitation

The Catholic Women’s League of Canada

National Implementation of the Strategic Plan

Dear Sisters in the League,

We received the following message from our CWL national president Anne Marie Gorman:

“As a follow up to a reorganization working group, and in the interest of achieving a good cross section of membership for a planned short survey, I would invite you to invite in turn members from your province to take part in the surveys

We hope to create a sense of urgency to ensure there is comprehensive participation/representation from members across the country.  The request would be for members to sign up and to take the survey before November 17

Please follow these instructions to sign-up:

The members may do so by following these instructions:

1) Go to the National website at: www.cwl.ca

2) Scroll down to “Quick Links” section of the CWL Home page

3) Click on “Implementation of the Strategic Plan

4) Scroll down to: “*NEW* (September 3, 2019) Click here to request to sign up and participate in surveys!”

Here is a direct link to the Implementation of the Strategic Plan page in case that works better for some members:  https://cwl.ca/implementation-of-the-strategic-plan/“.

Anne Marie hopes that a goodly number of our members respond and that this is a positive step towards reaching one of the goals.  I repeat the date of November 17 for our membership’s response.  Please contact me if you have any questions.  It is so important to have the views of the membership expressed when the strategic plan is in process.
