In Matthew 6:19 – 21, Jesus exhorts us to lay up treasures in heaven, for where our treasure is, so is our heart.

Sometimes, in this world, it’s hard to remember this.  We worry about so many financial things.  And as treasurers, that is part of who we are!  We have to stop every so often and remember that God will provide “in full measure, packed down and overflowing.”  All we need to do is ask Him.  He will provide what we need when we need it.

All of this brings me to:

ANNUAL REPORTS!!!

Over the past ten years or so, the members of the BC Yukon CWL have been amazingly generous to their parishes, their communities and the world.  In their annual reports, the total financial donations historically have topped $500,000. (Half a million dollars.)

With the advent of online reporting for 2016 and 2017, this donation amount dropped by more than half.  Part of the issue seems to have stemmed from the computer issues that National experienced.  Part of the drop seems to have come from the way the donation amounts were reported by standing committee rather than by organization supported.

I understand that the online reports for 2018 will become available in early November.  When the diocesan treasurers are talking with their parish counterparts, here are a few things to remember:

  1.  National Voluntary Funds are reported separately by parish.  The report form has specific lines for each one.
  2. Sometimes it is hard to fit a donation into a specific standing committee.  Does support for seminarians go to Spiritual Development or to Christian Family Life?  The parish treasurer should enter it where it makes most sense to her.
  3. Many parishes make annual donations in December.  These are usually standard amounts sent to the council’s favourite charities.  Be sure to include these in your total, as the report is for the whole calendar year.
  4. There was a line in 2017 for “Other donations”.  Whatever doesn’t fit into a category can be totaled here.

I’m hoping that National has fine-tuned their report collation this year so that we can get a better picture of just how our members give back to God for all His blessings.

DIRECTORS AND OFFICERS INSURANCE:

National has negotiated a very favourable Directors and Officers policy for us.  However, it has an effective date of March 1.  For 2018, only 2 dioceses were able to take advantage of this policy, as the others already had theirs in place as of January 1.  I recommend that the others check with your insurer as to the availability and cost for bridging coverage.  I have contacted National on this as well and will update you when I get more information.

CHRISTMAS IS COMING:

I want to take this opportunity to wish all of you a happy and holy season of Advent, and a merry Christmas season.

If you have questions or concerns, feel free to contact me.  I’ll do my best to help.
